The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was created in 1970 with the intentions of reducing the number of people who died on the road. They started doing safety ratings in 1993. The safety ratings are based on how well a vehicle does on a crash test, which will make it easier for people to make informed decisions when they are doing road tests. Every vehicle that is tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will receive a safety rating that ranges from one to five. The higher the safety rating is, the better.

Not only do you want to look for a vehicle that has a four or five star rating, you should also look for one that has driver assistive technology. This includes things such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning.
